Must do list for your Hari Raya preparation
Here Comes Hari Raya
We all know what festive season is back when shopping malls and street decorations begin to be filled with ketupat, greeting cards and oil lamps. Everyone starts making necessary arrangements in preparation for the Hari Raya Puasa celebration. For the Muslims, while staying mentally and spiritually strong in completing one of the pillars of our religion, fasting, they begin baking, buying new clothes, changing the curtains and covers, cooking and cleaning. For the others? Well, they get their stomach ready for the feast in the month of Syawal. Much needs to be done. So let us help you out with your checklist of things to do.
- Out with the old, in with the new
Everything has to be new for Raya; clothes, jewellery, accessories, shoes, shawl and even make up kit. Shopping malls and shops will be flooded with people choosing, trying and purchasing their new items of clothing. Not to mention the long queues at the fitting room and payment counter. So while we know you won’t forget to shop, remember to shop early. You’d get the first and best pick of everything.
- The green packet
It wouldn’t be the festive season without green packets filled with new RM notes. No matter the amount that fills the packet, head on out to a bank near you to get new notes. Be careful not to leave this task to the last minute as year in year out, banks nationwide run out of new money especially the blue RM1.00 note and green RM5.00 note.
- Please forgive me
In the morning of 1 Syawal, family members gather and seek forgiveness from each other. And then, for a whole month, family members and friends visit each other to seek forgiveness. However, there are family members and friends who are just too far away to be with. Go traditional by getting the greeting card at any hypermarket, convenience store or bookstore and mail it to them. Most stores have begun selling the greeting cards! Get them quickly before the ones you are eyeing on gets sold out. Alternatively, go digital by choosing a virtual card and have it emailed to those close to heart but too far to be with.
- From the kitchen to the heart
With the many history of origins from the different states in the country, the list of Raya traditional dishes is endless. It begins with ketupat (glutinous rice wrapped in the shape of a triangle) that is eaten with chicken or beef serunding (chicken or beef floss). And then there is the nasi impit (compressed rice) that is eaten peanut sauce or beef rendang. By day 2 of Syawal, many other spicy, vibrant coloured dishes are displayed for family and guests who visit. Before you can cook up a storm, stock up on all the ingredients you would need. It will be easy to overlook certain ingredients so start making a list of the things you need from now.
- Clean till it gleams
